    Default HEX Time

    Folks,

    Good Morning from Lake Almanor.

I just want to send you all a note about the lodging and campgrounds up here at Lake Almanor. If you are camping you may want to look for alternative lodging. The campgrounds are currently closed. I talked to both the Forest Service and PG&E and they have told me that they will open in what the state calls “Phase 3” of the re-opening. They’re projecting that will be open in June.

Update – I talked to the camp host at Rocky Point – their open date is June 28th. The USFS just posted new signs at Legacy & North Almanor Campground will be closed until June 25th.

This situation is changing moment by moment – if I hear anything else on any of campgrounds or anything that may affect lodging and or the fishing, I will let you know ASAP.

On the fishing note- the Hex has just started this week. The last two nights (June 10-11) we have seen great numbers of bugs on the water. The trout and bass are having a field day. Last night we landed 5 fish, all browns with one big 6-pound rainbow. Not bad in 3 hours. Nothing on the dry last night. But the last previous nights (June 8-9) the dry has been great.

At Geritol Cove we have been fishing deep, using RIO Type 7 Lake lines to get down to the big fish. At the Beach area and down at Wildcat we have been using RIO Intermediate Camolux Lake lines to fish.

Top flies have been – Lance’s Hex Bugger Size 8, Lance’s Swimming Black AP and Lincoln’s Stillborn Size 6. All have produced fish throughout the week. With Milt’s Hex Nymph Size 6 coming in 4th in the rating.

I have extreme limited of flies. I am tying flies everyday up here – just to keep up. Shops that have these flies would be The Fly Shop in Redding, The Reel Fly Shop in Grass Valley and Sierra Stream & Mountain in Chico (ask for Garrett when you call Sierra Stream, that is my son, he is working for Lincoln).

    I hope this helps everyone.

Technically, Stage 3 reopening starts today statewide...so it's a little disappointing they are slow to open the CG's, but also not surprising given it is PGE and USFS.

    Just an update.
Been cool and raining at the lake for the last three days. Fishing has been slow. Wind and pressure have been the main reasons. Still the hex is hatching every night and there are still fish slurping them down.

Will give another update on Thursday morning. Weather is going to warm up and the rain will go away.

Another great night at the lake. Hexes where everywhere. I personally got to fish last night. It was a great end of a fantastic father's day.
Big browns and feisty rainbows. Hit flies are Lance's Hex Bugger and my Lance's Swimming Black AP.

    Can't wait until tonight.

    Good morning from Lake Almanor
The Hex is in full swing. With fish being caught all down the West side of the lake.
Last couple of nights all we have been getting is Rainbows. Mostly 3 to 4 pounders. Occasionally a big Rainbow and Brown eat.
Top flies Lance's Hex Bugger and my Swimming Black AP.

    More to come.

    UPDATE
Almanor North Campground is open, so is Legacy. Rocky Point still closed.

Fishing last couple of nights has been great to good to not so good. The wind one night was bad. Swirling around the lake. Last couple of nights lots of bugs and lots of big fish!

Top producers are Lincoln's Stillborn for a dry and my Hex Bugger on the intermediate line.

Next year we hope to hit that window.....

I think Lincoln and Lance are up there June 15 to July 15 on average.
