Many years ago the East Coast Striper chasers used long rods with conventional reels like the famous Penn 140 Squidder.

On the East coast the have a huge "Shelf" where you can go out 20 miles and only be 60 feet deep.

This is why they have so many schools of bait fish and lots of gamefish like Stripers, Blues and Albacore.

After the war the GIs brought home spinning reels from Europe, mostly France I think.

During World War II they invented Nylon mono filament line too.

Around 1877 they brought small Stripers and Small American Shad to the West Coast.
