Default WTB Decent 8wt 9'/9'6" not top or bottom shelf.

Looking for an 8wt single hander to throw larger flies at striper. I figured I'd get more for my money from a used rod than buying a new one in this price range.

It should somewhere within these parameters

    • Around the $200 mark
    • Fairly fast action
    • 9' or 9'6"
    • 4 piece
    • fighting butt required (not many 8wts don't have one but..)

If you have something and would rather trade, I have plenty to offer too. Just let me know what you're looking for.

I've got an 8wt 9' TFO BVK that I don't use much anymore if you're interested. It's only been used a few times and it's great for throwing big stuff.

Gotta love the 8wt BVK. Op would be happy with that rod.

Honestly I've had some bad luck with my recent TFOs which has turned me off a bit. Had a blank break in half at the butt on casting - it was brand new and a manufacturing defect, a rod where all the ferrules have started to split (no they're not coming lose and have been waxed) and another rod which is just awful.

    A $200 4 pc 8wt will do that. That’s bottom shelf.
There are few things in life more pleasing than the sublime marriage of form and function that is found in a well crafted fly rod.

    Do what?

So $200 on a used rod is around a $400 rod.

Gotcha. I was saying a $200 4pc 8wt (like a BVK) will break. That’s a low end rod. That’s all. Can you get a decent graphite rod for $400 anymore? I have not fished a rod built after 1996 in a long time.

I am pretty sure that's not true at all. The rod that broke on me was a $400 TFO Axiom II Switch 7wt. I've fished plenty of budget rods along with high end rods in my time. Physical weight, action and fit and finish on higher end rods is noticeable, durability is not something I think is really a consideration, at least not in the rods I've fished. I am however questioning the quality control of TFO, not cheap rods in general.

    I’ve got a number of 8 and 9 wts. I can’t pay 600 plus for a rod, not sure why but I just can’t or won’t.

Right now I have an echo ion xl in 7 and 8. For under 200 dollars they are very serviceable, the 8 is a bit light for big clousers over 1/0 in size. I also have a tfo axiom II, that is a bit faster and stronger, but essentially the same.

Take a look at the ion xl- top shelf? No it’s not, by design. But it’s pretty damn good compared to rods twice the price made 5 years ago.
