The hottest fly for me was the G3 which started out as a steelhead soft hackle but I’ve tweaked it to a shad fly.

Wonderful Jeff.....thanks for another great Shad season report.
During the 57 days did you catch any other species?
What do you have planned for the next few months?

Suckers and pike minnow. I’m going to primarily target summer run steelhead and occasionally stripers.
This was the earliest I’ve ever caught a shad at Sailor Bar (May 3) and far and away the earliest end I’ve seen in 30+ years. Bluebacks, and some nice ones, stayed later as well. I only got one (1) shad on the surface, and saw almost no surface activity. But then, I didn’t get out as often or cover as much Water this year thanks to a combination of COVID and homeless camps. Anybody else see much surface action this year?
At the end of June I thought it was over but I did find a couple of holes during this month where they were schooled up. Fished 22 days during July from my boat or Earle's and averaged over 20 per day. Hot flies were the G3 and Earle's Cinnamon Pinkie. They finally left overnight this past weekend so I'm officially calling it for this run. I fished 81 days and landed almost 1350. I'm already looking forward to next year. Let's hope we get some big water!
We are so lucky to have the beautiful clear Lower American river flowing right through of city.
We get American Shad, Steelhead and Striped Bass for the most part.
Only in the last 20 years or so did people float the river. Before that we hardly ever saw any type of boats on it.
Thanks to Jeff and others who posted on this special annual Shad run report.
