I concur Terry, April's article is a great read. Interestingly it was not until the end of the 19th century that Dr. C. Hoffbauer and Stuart Thomson produce evidence the lines on fish scales might be interpreted as the age of a fish. However, it was H.W. Johnson who published an article in The Field in October 24, 1904, indicating each fish carried its own life history imprinted on each scale and could be used to age a fish. Later scientists noted the difference between steelhead freshwater and ocean growth.
