Sage 509 fly reel was the largest size made and has the bigger size pawl.

Good for a #8/9 single hand Steelhead rod or a #7/8 Switch rod or #6/7 Spey rod.

Click-n-pawl or ratchet reels are good for trout and Steelhead.

Not for saltwater, stripers or salmon.

This drag is very smooth, consistent and light to medium only.

All the 500 series have a palming rim which can help a lot.
At one time most European salmon reels were click and pawl.

Yes, you are correct........click-n-pawl reels are good for trout, Steelhead and Atlantic salmon.

    And maybe Shad.....

A good old friend, Mick Brown, took a Sage 509 to Christmas Island for Bonefish.

Every time he caught a fish you could hear it screaming for "miles".

There was powdered metal inside his reel after a week of Bonefishing.

I took a Sage 508 to the Tsiu river in Alaska for Silver Salmon.

Catching 50 fresh Silver salmon per day on a racket reel was a lot of work.

There are places where a good smooth strong disc drag reel is just better.

50 years ago there were no reels with a rim drag or rim control or rim brake.

Pflueger Medalists and Hardy reels had very little drag and no rim drag.

Back then people landed everything on reels with very little drag.

Eventually they had reels with disc drags like the Fin Nor, Seamaster, Taurus, and Pflueger Supreme.

Agreed, 509 definitely not suitable for saltwater species.

The Sage/Hardy 500 series reels are some of the highest quality click - n - pawl reels built.

Fully machined, high quality alloy, anodized finish and nickel silver parts.

Abel also made some super high quality "rachet reels"......in trout and two handed/Spey sizes.

Lots of the new classic Hardy fly reels are much improved over the old ones.
