    50 years ago I was told that the reason for the bead chain eyes was to turn the fly over so the hook was riding up.

    The reason was supposed to be that the roof of the Shad's mouth was tougher and the lower jaw was thin and hooks could pull out.

    Anything you can do to have your hook point ride up would be good. Maybe a swept down tail?

    Any sitings yet? what type of water conditions should one look for? deep pools, fast runs? slow runs?

    Typically you start looking for them end of April beginning of May.

The coolest part of the herring run was when a big striper rolled into a small pool and started wrecking shop. Those runs were pretty depleted then though, not sure about now.

    Excited for you Shad junkies, just can’t get into them, same Ol same ol! Try a birdsnest, works great. I’ll be swinging to stripers.

    The Blue Gill is the starter fish for most beginner fly fishers.

    The Shad is the starter fish for the Steelhead newbees.
