Default Got my little Trout Spey/Switch rod set up........

I realized that an old Harding & Sons rod and reel case for a 9' 3 piece rod works perfect for my new 11' 4 piece Spey?

I just put one extra 9' 0x leader, one spool of 2x tippet and a small fly box of Half-pounder flies in the top part of the rod and reel case.

I will be heading out in the early AM and/or late PM weekdays for Half-pounders.

I mostly just swing small wet flies on a floating line with a knotless tapered leader.

Many of us have fished this way for the past 50 years in the lower A.

    I hope I hook one..........

I have my custom light action spinning rod made from a 7' one piece Lamiglass fly rod blank from Edwoldt's Rod & Reel Repair.

I had the same Shakespeare small maroon President 2052 spinning reel that Lefty used for light Bonefishing back then.

I drifted big night crawler worms using an Eagle Claw #181 size 6 bait holder hook and different size single split shot.

My friends and brothers would go with me later and I taught them how to drift the bottom for Steelhead.

High schools friends Larry Kelley and Jim Silva went with me.

I also swung white & silver Rooster Tail spinners.

The runs in the 1960s were much better than the runs we have now with larger fish up to 5 pounds on occasion.

Catching them on a floating line with a swung fly is so much better though................especially if you have a click-n-pawl reel.

Never a bad idea to fish with someone else on these rivers. Safety being the obvious reason and it's just more enjoyable. Also handy for taking a picture. Both of my Klamath trips last fall were solo and although I can take care of myself pretty well I was always a little hypervigilant on that river. Bears, cats, and bad guys were always on my mind. No help down there if something goes wrong. Hope you do post Bill. I can get up there just about any weekday evening and I need to get off my butt and do it soon.

How was the Klamath for you last Fall?

Terry Thomas and friends are on the lower Klamath jet boating with guide for 4 days right now.

This first trip I went on twice and it was fun but not to productive.

The last day we go down and dirty for a fresh small King salmon each to take home.

They usually go 2 or 3 times every Fall.

If you can only go once I like October in the middle river from Orleans to Happy Camp.

Both trips were really good. Once in late September and once in October. 2 days more or less each trip. Fished hard every day, all day and there were some slow stretches at times and at other times lights out. First trip was in the Orleans area and the second trip was at Happy Camp however I found myself fishing closer to Orleans to be successful. First trip was with a single handed rod and second was with a Switch rod. Found the two handed rod to be invaluable as well as fun.

If someone new goes to the Klamath river it depends how they do that first trip wither they get bonded or not because it is a long ways.

Just chatted with Klamath River 40 year veteran Noe Fierros who use to work at the shop.

He went up there with old Joe Shirshac and some of us many years ago in his Alfa Romeo sports car.......

It must have been a good trip because Noe went up there about 3 times a year every Fall for decades.

He ended up bonding with the Klamath River Lodge below Orleans.

    http://www.klamathriverlodge.com/

Noe would invite people to go with him and helped spread the faith to many.

Noe used really small fly rods, floating lines and tied his own flies of which some were October Caddis imitations.

Now at 73 he thinks he is finished because that drive is just too long now.

I am 74 and can relate to what he is saying.
