Default Just got my Redington Hydrogen Trout Spey in the mail

They come in #2, 3 and 4 line sizes.

I picked the 11' #3 and they are all in 4 piece.

A friend gave me his father's Langley fly reel some time ago.

It is like a high quality Pflueger Medalist and in the same size as a 1495.

It has a slightly adjustable click-n-pawl drag with a round line guard.

I need to go over to Kiene's and get a Scandi head for it.

Can't wait to go out early and late for Half-pounders on my river, the lower A.

Nice rig. So what do most folks do for a running line with a Scandi head. I'm looking at Rio's Gripshooter and Slickshooter. If my memory serves me correctly I used the Slickshooter years ago with LC13 on a striper set up. I hated it. It was oval in shape and it had a propensity to twist and knot up, even with a good LMD. To me it wasn't any better than Amnesia. If I was buying one tomorrow I would probably spend the extra $30 for the Gripshooter just for the feel of a true flyline while casting.
Does anyone care to share their opinions or have some other options? Hope I'm not hijacking your post Bill.

Nice rod. I have the same rod, what line are you going to use?

Andy Guibord is working at Kiene's tomorrow so I will take my reel and rod in there and have him set me up.

I started using mono shooting line on big fiberglass single handed fly rods over 50 years ago.

I have never liked mono for shooting/running line so I will get a small diameter looped floating shooting/running line.

Although some of the best two-hand/Spey casters I know love mono for shooting/running line.

I will mostly be using a floating Scandi head and a knotless mono tapered leader about the length of the rod.

Again, I will mostly be using small wet flies in size #8/10/12 for Half-pounder Steelhead.

Bill, I’ve fished my Meiser 11’ 4 wt for several years and it’s become a favorite. It’s the only rod where I match the water to the rod rather than other way around, just to get another chance to fish it. The American, the Yuba and the Lower Sac are all great for trout speys. You’re going to love it.

MThompson - I’ve never tried the Slickshooter, would imagine it’s hard to grab. I’ve converted to the Gripshooter on all my rods and have had very few tangling issues. I’m not casting to the horizon, but I’ll hit an honest 100’ on my bigger rods without a problem. It gets a thumbs up from me on both Scandi and Skagit. My $0.02.

I have a spare spool for my old Galvan OB-4. So thinking I may need another rod

Would that match well to a Hydrogen Trout Spey 4 wt? I would think it would hold
enough line for a spey/switch set up?

    Thoughts?

I don't know how big that Galvin is but something that hold up to a 6wt or so line would be plenty. I have that switch chucker line on mine and it takes up alot of room on my Echo Ion 6/7 reel. I'm guessing a running line and head would take up less.

I use a Lamson size 3 on my 5wt switch and a size 3.5 on my 6wt. Works fine for me. I also have a 7wt switch that I rarely fish and on that I fish a echo ion 7/9 which balances good enough

I got a Rio looped small diameter floating running/shooting line.

I have to decide between the Rio Intouch Trout Spey #2 or #3 line floating head.

    #2 = 230 grn 23' long

    #3 = 265 grn 23' long
