Default We had a guy stop by the shop one day.........

.......he said had been tying flies for many years and that he got started when he was in the Boy Scouts many years ago.

He brought in 6 large clear plastic containers filled with pretty nice trout flies of all sizes and patterns.

He said he never had the desire to fly fish or anyone who would take him.

He said the highlight of his life was one even in the summer when he was up in the town of Truckee, California.

He was driving along the river and spotted a gentleman waded into the Truckee River fly fishing.

He stop, got out of is car and watched the man casting his fly over the beautiful water.

The angler noticed him and came out of the river and over to him to save "Howdy."

The man told him he had been tying flies sense he was a young man but had never fly fished.

He asked the angler if he would like some of is flies to try out?

He had boxes of flies in his trunk so the angler picked out some.

He said he angler waded back out in the water after tying on one of his creations.

Then it happened, the angler hooked and landed a large wild trout which many both men very happy.

He said it as so rewarding because it made him feel like he had been tying some pretty good flies.

That's a great story. I just caught my first fish on a fly I tied recently. It's a nice feeling.

I agree, fooling a trout on your own creation is pretty awesome. And if I lose one in a tree
it's probably .20 cents versus a $2.50 store bought fly.

I don't tie as much anymore. Only flies for specific trips like the Pit, Klamath or lakes.

Coincidentally sat down at the vice yesterday and tied up these golden shiner buggers.
I think the fish will like them.

Eric, I seem to be on the opposite trajectory as you. I don't fish as much any more, especially fly fish. But my tying has stayed the same as it has relatively. Anyway now I tie for friends, send 'em to charities (which is kinda funny because they certainly aren't pro quality, but hey, they take 'em), or just tie to relax!

    PS those buggers look nice.
    PPS cool story Bill!

That's funny John...when I first started tying, a guy I met on another forum told me he
would tie flies even if it was twice as expensive. Just because it's so fun to create and
try to fool a fish on your own patterns. I started tying with a kit my father bought me.

When I factor in all the materials I've purchased over the years, some used once or
twice, I think I maybe have broken even. Maybe.

When we got someone into our fly shop who said he was tired of paying for flies and was going to learn to tie his own we told them that it would not be worth it.

We recommended learning to tie flies only if you would enjoy it.

Plus most can not tie flies as good as the ones that are in fly shops.

Not that you can't tie crude flies that will catch fish.

Some will tie some of their flies and buy others.

When I would say that only about 10% of our customers tie their own flies many would say I was crazy.
