Default This is a good time to get into Two Handed /Spey casting.......

Sept/Oct/Nov is Fall Steelhead time so getting some kind of a Two Handed outfit would be smart.

Usually there are some used ones on our free Classifieds.

For Half-pounders you could get a Switch rod or a Trout Spey rod which are very close to the same thing.

Having someone help get the right line system is the most important as today the rods are very good.

Echo, Redington, and TFO all have good affordable Two-handed fly rods, Spey and Switch.

I already have a medium size Spey rod, 12' 6" #6 line in 4 pc so I am thinking of a very light #3 or 4 line Switch or Trout Spey.

In the Fall most use floating Scandi heads with long tapered mono leaders or sinking Poly/Versi leaders.

Andy Guibord at Kiene's Fly Shop is a top two handed guide and instructor who can help you get going.

I have the Echo TR Spey in a 4wt. Such a fun rod once you figure a few things out. I took one lesson with Andy last fall and had a very successful trip shortly afterwards on the Klamath using the techniques he taught me. It opens up so much more water because you can fish spots where a backcast isn't possible. This in turn equals more fish in the long run.
My rod is paired with a Switch Chucker but this year I want to try a Scandi line. Will also need a refresher course from Andy also. Can't wait til Fall.

That's great.....the big advantage is being able to fish with no back cast room.

I have the Echo TR 12'6"#6 that is too heavy for Half-pounders so I an getting a smaller two handed fly rod soon.

Sept/Oct/Nov is a big window for Fall Steelhead but go in October if you only go once.

Getting out with Andy soon will get you ready fore the lower American, lower Yuba, lower Feather, lower Sac?

He can help you pick a good two handed fly rod and get the right line on it too.

Trinity, Klamath and Rouge are a little further, but worth the trip.

    I echo Bill's recommendations

I fished with Andy once, he is a great guide and makes for a fun trip.

I have taken Spey casting lesson from Jeff, he is a very good teacher and really has a system down for teaching 2-handed casting.

I am getting a Redington Hydrogen Trout Spey 11' #3 in 4 pc.

    https://www.redington.com/fly-fishin...gen-trout-spey

Probably a little light but I am throwing mostly #10/12 soft hackle wets.

Most would be better off with the 11'6" #4 for Half-pounders and trout.

In mid-August at about 6:00 am on a weekday down around River Park on the Lower American River I will be looking for those chrome little rockets for a few hours. I will also go out about 6:00 pm and fish until dark at a different riffle down that way.

I worked in the fishing business within a few miles of that river and fished those Half-pounders for about 60 years with some of my best old buddies.

Galen Geller (Oregon Salmon), Paul Keel, Phil Romig, Kyle Keaton, Ralf Heath, Al Perryman, Hal Janssen, Jim Potter, Al Fong, Mel Jeffs, Mike Ziem, Bob Giannoni, Joe Shirshac, Chuck Campana, George Martin, and many others chanced those fish with us back in the day.

That 3wt will be a blast with the half-pounders.
