Default Hexagenia mayfly emergence on Lake Almanor has started.

I called Nor Cal guides and instructors, Lincoln and Lance Gray, up at Lake Almanor today.

They said the Hex hatch started a few nights ago.

This is the biggest mayfly in North America.

The nymphs start to wriggle up from the silty bottom of Almanor in the late afternoon.

They said it could go for the next 30 days.

Sadly the fly shop in Chester has closed.

If you are up there and need some flies Lincoln and Lance have a good supply at their cabin.

Hex hatch is going strong, lots of bugs and fish coming to the surface. Lance and I are having a good time up here! I have several openings next week and the week after, if anyone is interested in fishing the Hex Hatch. Feel free to call me.

Are you guys catching big smallmouth and browns by the dam? I think most don't know but I learned from Lance that it often productive to fish a hex nymph before the hatch. I like the Mercer's hex nymph. Lincoln's stilborn I think it is called is also deadly.

I think Lance or Lincoln told me they fish in the late afternoon / early evening with a sinking line and a Hex nymph.

I can now imagine they would use a floating line with an indicator and Hex nymph?

Some might fish Hal Janssen style with a floating line and really long leader and Hex nymph.

I think Hal uses his gray Janssen Leech as the Hex nymph imitation.
