I guess this is actually at the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River. It looked like that in the 1960s but we had about half that many

    people.

I drove by and looked at the Minnow Hole south of the Sacramento Zoo on the Sacramento River today and it was all grown over.

We rode our bikes down there, maybe 2 miles, in the spring in the 1960s and caught lots of Shad on spinning tackle.

We had some really good Japanese fishermen in south Sacramento and I watch what they were doing.

I really checked out there setup and then watched them cast and retrieve.

The fish came along the wall in schools. After a while I would just wait until the anglers below me started hooking fish.

Upper right is Theo Way, my street. In the 1960s Interstate 5 did not exist though.

I remember fishing at the Minnow Hole with my dad. Seems like it was mostly for catfish and striped bass. Best part of the day was going to that little store on the south side of the hole and getting an ice cream sandwich.

Fishing with dad brings back the best memories. Tony

It was the location for shad. It got the name from the guys using minnows fished over the end of a cane pole with a piece of wire shaped like a “U” fastened to the end. I saw many large stripers landed there and they were only @8 feet from the bank.

There was a big pipe at the top of the run that water flowed out of that helped create that spot.

After a few years we realized it was actually the sewer outflow for the sewage plant in South Sacramento.

It all changed when they put in the new outlet system in and they “rocked in” the slot where the stripers traveled up river.
