Stripers and Halibut are inside Tomales Bay right now.

We drove over to the coast to show relative from South Dakota around.

They are getting Stripers and Halibut inside Tomales Bay right now.

They are getting crabs and bottom fish outside too.

The salmon season is predicted to be good and will start soon.


**Tomales Bay is very protected and a great place to fly fish out of any size boat or a kayak or SUP.


Dungeness crab closes the end of June but we get bay/rock crabs all summer.

Locals say that the wind will usually slows down after the 4th of July so we like July, Aug, Sept over there.

Maybe we can have a forum outing in August to Lawson's Landing RV/Campground to fish and crab inside Tomales that is 10 miles long.

Except for those big fish called Great Whites!

I saw a video not to long ago with a guy catching small halibut with a fly rod. That is something I'd
like to try with halibut going for $30+ per pound!

Bill, I'd be real eager to get in on that forum outing. If you can make it happen, I'm sure many folks would have a great time getting out for some halibut fun on the fly.

When we go over there this summer I will let everyone know the dates we will be there.

They have nice tent camping on mowed grass.

I think Striper fly tackle would be perfect.

I have friends who live there who know all about catching everything on conventional gear so we would have good Intel.

Is there a primer on halibut fly fishing? Is it fun or is it the ‘its cool that i got one on a fly but its more suited to gear’ fishing. I have Ken Hanley’s book but Am wondering if there is other info...

They catch lots of flounder and halibut on jigs so watch some of those videos.

They are a very aggressive fish.

They fish best on a moving tide.

The lay on the bottom and when something swim near, they attack it.

While don't specifically target big Halibut up here , I do catch a lot of them in Baja . I'd start w/ a 9 wt. , and a line that will get to the bottom quickly . Focus on sand patches at different depths , always in current . Chart/White or Blue/White Clousers and Decievers , or Gold Buccaneers #1-3/0 , slow strips making contact w/ the bottom occasionally . Always try to find a slope , like the shoulder of a channel - Halibut LOVE laying at an angle , and will flip up and smash whatever goes by .
