On May 4 (two weekends from now), the Southwest Council of Fly Fishers International (SWCFFI) and the Coastal Conservation Assoc. of California (CCACal) are putting on a surf-fishing "tournament" called "Riptide Rendezvous".

It will be at Rincon Beach Park, which is in Carpinteria (Santa Barbara County, south of Santa Barbara, north of Ventura). It's a fundraiser, with all net proceeds going to SWCFFI and CCACal for conservation and outreach programs.

The event is all catch-and-release, artificial lure only, and has separate divisions for Fly- and Conventional-gear anglers.

It features a "one lure" format, similar to the "One Surf Fly" events of years past.

In this format, every entrant donates a fly or lure to a pool. Before fishing, each contestant makes a blind drawing from the pool, and has to fish with that single fly or lure for the duration. If you lose it, you're done! Fishing is limited to 2 hours, so there is a premium on finding the fish and strategy.

Prizes (in each division) are for 1st fish, longest fish, and most inches of fish (everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, counts!).

Fishing is followed by awards, lunch, and a raffle featuring a bunch of great prizes, including apparel from Patagonia, rods and reels, and other good stuff.

Entry fee is a mere $10, and you can also order event t-shirts and lunch (this year lunch is catered!).

Latest reports (as in this Saturday) from the area are of good Barred perch fishing, although they were running a bit small. But as they say" "Past performance is not a guarantee of future results", "It's called fishing, not catching..." yada, yada...no matter what, it's always a fun time.

Here is the website: https://swcffi.org/riptide.

You can find more details on the event, the full rules, and most importantly, links to the online registration page, and the page to order your shirts and lunches!

If you have any problems registering, or you don't want to pay on-line, PLEASE do not hesitate to call (760) 419-2124, or email rendezvous@swcffi.org, and we'll get you signed up.

We are asking to people to register by midnight on April 30, because we we have a limited number of spots due to our special event permit.
