Local Sacramento City fire fighter retired.......one of the Greatest Generation.

Smoken' Joe is one of the most famous local fly fishers, having taken groups of old friends fishing all over the world.

He fished Rainbows and Sockeye salmon in the Brooks River in Alaska, Steelhead in the Dear River in British Columbia, Giant Brook trout and Northern Pike at Copper's Minipi Lodge in Labrador, Atlantic salmon in the Miramichi River in Nova Scotia, Bonefish and Trevally at Christmas Island in the Central Pacific, Bonefish in the Bahamas, plus Rainbows and Brown trout in New Zealand.

Joe also fished Northern California, Oregon, Idaho and Montana for trout in lakes and streams.

He also had a passion for Fall Steelhead on the Klamath and Trinity Rivers starting in the 1950s.

Joe liked catching fresh King salmon on the lower Eel and Smith Rivers in the fall.

He also chased winter Steelhead on the American, Russian, Gualala, Garcia, Eel and Smith Rivers.

Joe had a special love for large Striped Bass in Nor Cal rivers and the Delta.

Today Joe does shuttles on the lower American River and get's out with Captain Andy Guibord in his jet boat on the Lower American and Delta for Stripers.

Joe tied Shad flies for several tackle shops back in the day.

He loved Shad fishing in the lower Feather, Yuba and especially the American rivers.

I remember the day Andy took that photo fondly. Myself and Jason Hartwick were chasing half pounders/shad and Joe and Andy showed up and Joe put us all to shame.

It was 44 years ago when I first met Joe during a float tube outing that Billy arranged for a few friends on lower Putah Creek.

My conclusion after all these years, to know Joe is to LOVE who he is...Happy Birthday my friend!

    Best, Bob G

Joe is a true gentleman! It’s always a pleasure talking with him in the shop, on the water or doing the shuttle. Love hearing the stories of his fishing trips and tips! Happy Birthday Joe!

For Mr Joe's 90th, the Kiene shop held a birthday bash.
I sent a card along with a small gift. Less than a week later,
I received a thank you note from Mr Joe in the mail. He leads
    by example! Happy Birthday to a true gentleman;
    an inspiration to all.

Hah! That video is still funny! Forgot all about it til you put up the link.
Just one Painted Lady Butterfly sighted today, still waiting for it.
I know I know, I live in North Highlands, there's a painted lady migration every evening. Get your minds out of the gutter, we're talking Butterflies here.
