    An 8 weight Spey rod is a large powerful rod for throwing bigger flies.


    In shorter lengths like 12'6" they are usually for using shorter Skagit heads with fast tips and big wet flies for smaller rivers and winter Steelhead fishing.



    Longer rods like 14' are for longer belly floating lines for big open river, long casts with a long leader and tradition winged fly.



    **This is just some general info I can post that I gathered from being around serious Spey anglers like Mike McCune, Jeff Putnam and Doug Duncan.
