You might call the Rogue Outdoor Store in Gold Beach.

Gold Beach is pretty far away so I'm guessing the Rogue Outdoor Store guys won't be much help. Try Rogue Fly Shop in Grants Pass which is near where the Applegate flows: (541) 476-0552

I just called Al Perryman up in the Gold Hill / middle Rogue River area who has fished the Applegate for many years.

He said the window / timing for the Applegate River for Steelhead is mid-Feb right through the end of March when it closes, weather /

    rain dependent.

    Bill,
Drove by the Applegate once. Never fished it!
Also was curious about the Illinois, which flows into
the Rogue just below Agnes. Wish I was fishing these
    streams in the '50's.
Best to you and your kin.

Those numbers look about right on the Gate, it gets pretty dicey above 1000 and I like it better below 750. It has limited access, I've mostly fished it below the Redwood Hwy bridge. March seems to fish best, and you will either find nothing or an epic day, rarely is it just a one fish type day. If you find one, you'll find a bunch, and most will be near or over 10#. Wonderful river.

I never made it over to the Illinois. I'm told it requires high clearance 4WD, but is pretty lightly pressured and can also fish really well. Have fun!

I went to the Illinois in summer, it's a rough road in summer! Definitely wild down there. Gorgeous country. Most of what I've read states if you want to live, don't take a boat down.
