    Default First trip to Baum

Read all the material I could get my hands on about Baum Lake. It seems to be one of the better winter still water venues. I also went on You Tube as well. Everything I know about Baum was researched before my four hour trek to try my luck. I took a newbie friend and my drift boat. I also took way too many rods and set-ups ready for any situation. We ended up using two rods, the ones with midges under an indicator. I know people will want to know numbers so suffice it to say my goal was 30 and we exceeded that by almost twice that. All in all it was a great day of catching. It helps to know the fish are in there. So many fish!!!!

    Hi Bill

What size and type / color midge did you use?

I had almost forgot about Baum Lake being one of the noted winter fisheries for fly fishers.

Many years ago Mel Jeffs and I fished Baum, McCumber, Manzanita, McCoy, Long, Grace and Nora lakes up that way.

Anyone have contact info for Mel Jeffs who moved up to Oregon?

You know Bill I think they were around size 18. What ever fly was on the bottom got them. We used red and black for our colors. If the red fly was on the bottom they took that. If it was the black fly they took it. 'We used a two fly set up.

They empty the hatchery this time year so great place for a beginner to get a grab. Check out YouTube video’s on Baum and you’ll understand. Fished there last Sat. and couldn’t find a fly that wouldn’t work, really. It was a bit boring except I was with best buddy and had great laughs.
