    ed,
Some tippet spools have a notch in the rim that allows one to secure the
loose end. I'm guessing that you could cut one in your spools with a razor
    blade.

I wrap the very end of the leader around the elastic (one wrap) it keeps the leader material from un-spooling. Plus it is easy to find the end of the leader when you pull on the elastic.

Thanks for all the replies. I probably carry too many spools (5). But whenever possible I go to heavier tippet material. Larry, you're right about the notched spools. They are my favorites. However, when out fishing I usually drop into the local fly shops to restock and I get whatever is available. I will be ordering new elastic tenders. I still believe the best thing I can do, because I do a lot of cross country, is to put my spools in a lower vest pocket.

Adopt a 12 year old girl with long hair and steal her hair ponies. Or go to the drug store and buy hair ponies, whichever is easier.
You can't buy happiness, but you can buy new fly fishing gear and that usually does the trick.

Like Jersey said, I went on line and found a site that showed how to make spool tenders from elastic, beads and shrink tubing. Works great and you can make them to fit amnesia, maxima and thread spools. Gives you something to do too.

Thanks, I just watched the procedure on Youtube. Looks simple, and I can use it for my spools of fly tying materials also.
