    Default Northern Yosemite

I backpacked into northern Yosemite last week. There is an abundance of backcountry there if you don't mind doing some mileage and some vertical. I went in at Hetch Hetchy and hiked as far as Mary Lake. Check it out on the map if you are interested. I caught rainbows in some of the lakes, small goldens in a stream, climbed to the top of Chittenden Peak for a great view, threw rocks at a bear that wanted granola bars, had a little snow, read 200 pages of Catch 22 and took some photos. Good stuff.

    That is some fishy water

I love walking around alpine areas like this

Nice pictures, good job on the hike, that is a beautiful area. So nice to get out of the valley and see how pretty the Sierras really are, Mems.

Beautiful and inspirational Jon! That last one you should have entered into the CAL Trout Photo contest. That is one of the best fish pictures I've ever seen!

Very cool and inspiring- that's why I visit this message board!
The one that you call a sharp photo is pretty neat- it almost looks to be an in air shot as opposed to water with the fish balancing

Just awesome, John! Don't you love it when you get to a lake and see big cruisers!

Just curious.......how many days were you in there? That's quite a hump up Jack Main Canyon. And if you say you made it to Tilden in one day, then you are a super stud!!!

Tilden is about 23 miles. I took three three days getting there. Three days going in, a layover day at Tilden and two days going out. The first day out of Hetch Hetchy is tough because you start at 3800 feet but the first backpacking day is always tough.

I saw those goldens in the creek and figured they were rainbows. I was pretty surprised when I caught one. When I took the pictures I thought they were terrible. I looked at them a couple of days later and was surprised to see they were good.

That small Golden does look like it is floating in the air. Clear water and no shadows from surface ripples.

It is good to be out of the smoke. I could see a small fire about 10 miles south of me. I guess they are watching it and letting it burn.

    Thanks John

    Wonderful country and lonely fish.

Do you think this area gets much traffic?
