This is happening all over the world in some form or another. Florida is a red state and a democracy, just vote big sugar out. Eminent domain their asses out!

Up until the Cuban Embargo, Florida did not have an established sugar cane business. The US was dependent and happy with a viable source (read as cheap) of sugar grown in Cuba. When US-Cuban relations went into the toilet with Castro, sugar cane fields popped up in Southern Florida. Someone decided to fill the void that was created by the embargo. This is similar to the Iranian embargo. These embargos benefit some folks who can see the opportunity. Almond orchards exploded in the south end of San Joaquin Valley due to an entrepreneurial undertaking by those that saw a benefit or a buck to be made by filling the void with the Iran Embargo. In Florida, phosphorus concentrations build up in Lake Okeechobee did not just happen overnight. Agricultural runoff along with some of the manmade obstacles, thanks in part to the Army Corp of Engineers, this has become an environmental mess for Florida. It will be interesting to see just how the algae problem is solved. Where is Scott Pruitt when Florida's ag sugar needs him most?
