Question re skagit versus scandi versus?

How do you know what to set up on a rig for floating versus sinking?

I have an Echo3 12'7" 6 wt set up with a 425 grain Skagit head.

I'd like to try a floater this fall, but not sure where to start.

Suggestions?

Have someone like Andy Guibord or Jeff Putnam recommend a good Scandi head for that rod.

Tim Rajeff could give you a good recommendation too.



Scandi heads cast nice, smoother and are for using a mono tapered leader as long as your rod with a classic winged wet Steelhead


fly or a Poly / Versi leader for sinking a little mid-day.



Skagit heads are for using very fast sink-tips ( T material) with a short heavy leader and larger heavy weighted flies for cold water in

the winter.



In the Fall (Sept/Oct/Nov) many just use a mono leader the length of their rod and an unweighted classic winged wet Steelhead fly.



Some us are headed for the lower Rogue in mid-September and will be using mostly floating lines with tapered mono leaders and small unweighted wet Steelhead flies.

31’ rio Scandi short 350gr-375gr should be good on that rod. I have the 11’ switch version and use a 325gr Scandi body at 23’. For a Skagit head I use an OPST.

Thanks all, so I'm wondering what is the best option. I bought a skagit max short 450, and its paired right now with a MOW tip labeled Med 5/5 T-11. I've been told that with this setup I only need to swap a different tip- for example a 10 ft floating MOW tip. Is that a good option?

Some use Skagit heads and several different MOW tips all the time.

Some use Skagit heads with MOW tips only in the colder winter months to throw bigger, heavier flies.

Some use Scandi heads with tapered mono leaders or Versi/Poly leaders in the summer/fall with light weight classic winged flies.

Scandi heads cast smoother and nicer with lighter flies.

easiest thing to do would be to buy a floating tip ( or make a floating tip ) like a mow medium float tip add a tapered leader.

If you want to invest a little more time and money you could purchase a scandi head with mono tapered leader or if you want help getting fly down use a sinking polyleader.

stopped by the shop and showed the current setup to Andy, 10 minutes later I'm on the way with a floating MOW tip.

And of course didn't have time to fish it! I fear I am a tackle ho of the worst magnitude....

Andy has a real good idea of what type of system you need on your two handed fly rod and especially what weight in grains.

Got a window last night to get out and try the rig- swung a nice run for a couple hours, for no taps, but it felt great to get out.

I really need to find more time for this type of fishing, just hard not to feel the pull of the delta and those bass.!
