Headed to Alaska in a couple of weeks. Three of us are going to float American Creek in the Katmai area. I usually float the Koktuli. This is a bit more challenging of a float as far as the river goes. And this area has the highest concentration of brown bears in the world. The average age between the three of us is 72.
My point is, age is just a number and what we lack in muscle we more than make up for with experience (not to mention good looks).

In your case, Lee, you've got the muscles AND the looks.

    Sounds like a great adventure.

I floated the Togiak River out of Bristol Bay Lodge in 1976.

Jim & Kitty Vincent and Bus Bergman were our guides.

It was one of my top 10 trips in my life time.

Camping on gravel bars is so magical.

    A float trip is timeless......

Those float / camp trips make the best memories.

Lodges are great - especially the hot shower part. And the good lodges have guides who know their area inside out. They're going to treat you well because they want you to come back.

DIY float trips are great, too. No showers, of course. But with the right gear and preparation you can be very comfortable and eat very well. One big advantage to a DIY float trip is the amount of fishing time you get in. I mean you're always close to the river, plus it stays light out until pretty late in AK (mousing time).

very eerie that this thread was posted before his trip...hoping for a miracle, despite the dim prospects.
