Default Trout biting in Black Hills, SD today.............

Walked up to a guy on a small lake in the Black Hills today.

He was on vacation and had just bought a pretty nice fly fishing outfit.

His casting was OK but had no idea how to strip the line and "work" the fly.

I ask him if he wanted me to show him some basic still water technique.

While I was demonstrating how to strip the line through you fingers on you rod hand I hooked a Rainbow trout.

I quickly handed him the rod........

Most of the time people just need an hour or so to get them started off.

I think this is the best way to get someone started. Trying to cast and not "getting it" (for awhile) can be frustrating. Having a fish on is the "here is what it is about". Gives them a goal.
"For years, every time he stopped at the house to collect his paper money, it was the same routine. The old man in the wheelchair would ask him how he'd like it if he took him fishing and showed him a few things. He always said he'd like that.
When the old man finally passed away, his wife gave the kid a box of flies. He has them today, tucked away in a closet, never to be fished."
