    Default Fly box

I spent a lot time getting this loaded up but I should be able to do a lot of fishing out of it. I would hate to think what would happen if I lost it somehow. It is hard to see what is in there but lots of deer hair divers and whistlers, some Clousers, Murdich minnows, crawdad like streamers, pike streamers, angel hair sardines and a few other things. All of them homemade except for the airheads. A lot of rubberlegs and flashabou in there - those really seem to be fish catchers. The tying and talking are done. Time to fish.

    Cool John

What are the places that you would take all those flies?

Those flies would be good for bass or stripers anywhere but for me they are going to Canada. The fish there are not terribly selective so anything that gets their attention and has some action has a good chance of getting grabbed. You do need to put a sneak on them. If they see you pull up in you canoe they put two and two together and snub your offering.

In addition to the flies I have about 55 pounds of gear, 80 pounds of food for me and twenty pounds of food for my dog. That should be good for 32 days. The ice has been breaking up in the last week or so. Should be a hoot.

Carl - you have to load up for a big trip. I know your Baja trips are long. That looks like about what you would need for a month plus down there. Don’t lose that box.

I will wear out or lose all of those deer hair divers. Not so much the sub surface stuff but I like to try some new flies and tying is fun so I have a lot. There are about four or five dozen flies in there. I have lures and jigs also - good for the walleye and lakers.

I did a full re-tie of my trout box a couple of months ago. That was a big job but I was running out of almost everything so I needed to do it.

I love tying flies in anticipation for a trip. However long the trip is, it extends it last that much longer. I'm going to Hat Creek next week and have been tying up flies for the past week. A one week trip extends into two.

Bill - Most people up there stick to eating walleye. I have eaten a laker and a couple of pike but they are not as tasty as walleye although some do people speak highly of them. The classic way to cook the walleye is battered and fried in oil and I have done that but you have to carry a bunch of extra stuff and it cuts into your fishing time. My method now is put the filets in foil with some spices and set them in the fire. My dog likes them that way also but I leave the spices off of her pieces.

I have not eaten a Smallmouth but I expect they are good. Regulations allow a maximum size of 13.9” to protect spawning fish so I have not kept one. The Canadians are pretty good about protecting the fish. The entire park (Quetico) is barbless no bait and limits are restrictive but still way more than you can eat in one day. Fishing is not as good on the US side of the border where the regulations are less conservative.
