According to Peter Moyle shad enter California rivers when the water temp is 57 degrees but I have seen them in the American at 53-54 degrees.

I saw a photo on JD Richeys Facebook of a shad caught this past weekend on the Sacramento River, would guess he’s around Colusa

Still haven’t caught one but I’ve tried for the past few days. Everywhere I’ve fished people have asked me about shad. Everyone is chomping at the bit!

Finally caught my first shad this year. I lucked out and landed a nice hen midday, only one after an hours worth of fishing. The striper bite was down because no one else out there caught anything so they must be here. Anyone have any tips fishing for shad in the morning or around noon? I work the evenings so I won't be able to hit the hour of power as much this year.

The last hour of light is typically the best time but I have done well at other times during the day.
