    Default Metolius River, Oregon

Anyone ever been in late Feb - mid March time frame?

    Looking for bulls...ideally swinging...

PM is fine if you don't wanna post publicly. Not looking for mile markers...just a "yes, go" or "ehhhh..." when bearing in mind it is a 7 hour drive and a few hundred bucks.

Been there twice in that time frame once was "meh..." and the the other was "ttthhhppttt..." No bulls either time, but a few nice rainbows.

Have not been there that time of year, unfortunately, having tried for a bull a few times, but always in the fall. The fly shop in Sisters, the Camp Sherman Store, or Fin and Fire in Redmond would be the places I'd give a call to get more details. Be sure to check the regs because they vary quite a bit.

I would recommend reading "Trout" by Judith Stolz - 1991 has a great section on Bull Trout Life history that goes into great detail even beyond Behnke's Book. Late August is the best time to try for Bulls on the Metolius and the lower section by Jefferson Creek Campground would be my suggestion. Big Water. Put large Clousers DEEP

Thanks everyone for the insight. Unfortunately my travel plans evaporated with some stuff going on with the family. Might try to line it up again in early May...or around Labor Day...

Was there and this is what I gained: Some of the most beautiful campgrounds in the NW. The local store /fly shop is very accommodating, and was there for 4 days. Beautiful river, and very scenic. As for the fishing, it was difficult to say the least. So much so, I wend home befuddled and later learned that is the nature of the beast. Worth the trip though.
