Schools of small Permit, Bonefish, baby Tarpon and Snook in very shallow water.

It is one of my favorite fisheries but it is not always that easy.


Have really good Polarized sun glass and get your casting game up.

9' - 4 piece #8 and #9 weight rods with floating tropical lines.


Get a 3 pk of Rio Bonefish 10' 10# knotless tapered leaders & compatible tippet material.

Small light colored Raghead crabs for Bonefish and Permit.


Get some 20# leaders with a 40# shock tippet for baby Tarpon and Snook.

#1/0 - 2/0 small, light weight (no weight) streamers for Baby Tarpon and Snook


Try to get out very early....

June, July and August are some of the best months.


I have fished Isla Blanca lagoons north of Cancun for over 20 years with many groups.

Thanks guys. I can tie all the flies and can good to go casting wise etc but will need some education on shock tippets, new rig set ups, lines etc. Great forum as many have stated and appreciate the feedback.

Sorry guys, one more question. Is there a material difference between a tropical line vs a traditional steelhead (ex 9 wt wf) line. When I was in the keys 5 years or so ago that tropical line was a nightmare with coiling and prevented shooting. Thoughts?

Fresh water or cold water lines are OK for wading in the tropics but you need the stiffer tropical lines for casting off the hot deck of a boat.

I would get a Rio Tropical OBS floater or a Shorter Rio Bonefish line.

Snook / Baby Tarpon leaders:

butt = 3'- 4' of 30# mono

breaking tippet = 2' of 20# mono

shock / bite tippet = 2-3' 40# mono

**Stiffer mono or fluorocarbon is good for this.

Use Albright knot to connect sections and Homer Rodes loop knot to the fly.

**We fish really light flies right on the top because the water is so shallow.
