Salmon Rebound in Mokelumne - Record Returns

This was in our local newspaper and seems to have been reported by various news organizations in N Cal with big push by EBMUD and CA DFW..

Seems the "agencies" involved are touting that salmon are returning in record numbers. Interesting read, especially the part where they have been hauling the juvenile salmon downriver past all the water diversion canals and water pumps plus they are giving fry a saltier diet in the weeks prior to releasing them in an effort to increase their adapting to sea water...never heard of that before.

I've never fished the Mokelumne for steelhead. Where are the best places to wade and what kind of flies work best?

I know there is a good caddis hatch in the spring usually.........March/April.

Living in Lodi and Stockton for many years there are lots of places just downstream from the hatchery where you can walk and wade. It is also a FABULOUS river to float. This is because during the are plenty of places to get out a walk and wade that are normally inaccessible any other way. Additionally, there is a great late evening caddis hatch from late Sept until Nov 15 when the river closes for 6 weeks. Other nice thing is the river is not "well-known" so it does see a whole lot of fishing pressure. HOWEVER, during the summer months is does see A LOT of rafting pressure.

From videos there seems to be a lot of submerged snags that would make a hard shell canoe or kayak preferable to an inflatable. Is that the case during summer & fall?
