Default Tying in the style of Ed Haas

Working on a very large shadow box for my grandson. Should be close to 100-flies displayed when it's all said and done. I'll be adding a whole row of old timey California and Southern Oregon favorites tied in the style of Ed Haas. I tied the patterns on a vintage Mustad 9002 (returning loop eye).

Default Ed Haas flies, they are classics.

This brings back memories. Your ties are spot on. I was able to visit Ed back in 77 and spend the day tying with him and picking his brain. What a man, he kept to his high standards in each fly he tied. He said he had tried to do production one day, but after 3 dozen he wasn't happy with the flies and threw them in the franklin stove. He related his standards for his materials, which were provided by Andy Puyans and Eric Leiser. He also had his hooks custom made by Alcock in England. 4 extra strong and 4 extra long. He would have jars upon jars of hackle that had been sized and sifted through. He would then match up rights and lefts and put them on a board with hackle pliers so they were presorted when he sat down to tie. He tied at night, was a night owl, and listen to Dodger baseball. He said that he guaranteed each fly not to come apart.
I can attest to that, after visiting Ed I went down and fished the Klamath and caught about 20 half pounders, even with a wind knot looped around the wing, nothing came apart. That includes the flat tinsel body that was getting chewed up. Here to Ed, thanks for the memories and the standards you set. Dennis

When I had "The Fly Hutch - Sacramento" I could buy Ed Haas Steelhead flies wholesale from Creative Sports in Walnut Creek in the 1970s.

Many bought them to use as patterns or to collect them.

Honestly, way back then we really did not appreciate them or understand them.

After Ed passed away a friend who is a commercial fly tier went up to the Forks of the Salmon River in northern California to look at all his stuff that was for sale.

Cool that you have those special hooks he had made custom for him.

    Thanks SST

Having spent a lot of time on the Northern Puget Sound streams (before everything was shut down) and Olympic Peninsula's waters the men and their flies intrigued me...

If you interested in a little history and a SBS of Ed's style..
