Default LGC's Lassen Stillwater Campouts Report

    Folks,
We just got back from Lassen Volcanic Park with our first ever LGC’s Lassen Stillwater Campouts. They were great! We fished and visited Manzanita Lake, Butte Lake, Baum Lake, Crater Lake, North Battle Creek Reservoir and Lake McCumber.
The campout is more than just a campout it is a guided trip, workshop and yes a camping trip. We had three separate campouts with 12 people. It was a hoot. I would like to thank all that came for the campouts and left with amazement of the Lassen Park area.
During the campouts we tour and fish different lakes customized to each group’s needs. Here fishing report of most of them.
    Manzanita Lake
Fishing was good with fish being taken on midges under indicators. Fishing between the weed beds and the pot holes in the weed beds where the ticket with the midges. We also picked up fish on stripping Callibeatis nymphs and damsel fly imitations. The most constant fishing was at low light conditions. That being said we had lots of clouds, thunder clouds at times and a little rain. On Sunday the 27th we ran into a great hatch of Callibeatis in the morning. The water was super still and a Adams Parachute on a 12’ leader to 7x was the ticket. If you used 6x they would refuse the fly! Top flies are Lance’s Zebra Midge Black and Red in size 18-20, Lance’s X-May Callibeatis in size 14, Adams Parachute Size 16, The Greenie in size 12 and JFair’s Wiggle Tail in Olive/Orange in size 12.
    Crater Lake
Fishing was wonderful with lots of fish. This is a special lake for me. We landed hundreds of fish during the day. With some folks have at least that many strikes. We had dry fly action and tons of stripping action. Dry flies that work great was a PMD, Adams Parachute and my Black Ant. The best stripping flies are and there is only one – my Black AP tied stillwater style. Fish ranged from 8-14”. A gorgeous place! Top flies are Lance’s Carpenter Ant in size 12, Adams Parachute in size 14, Ray’s Parachute PMD Size 14 and Lance’s AP Black Stillwater Nymph size 12.
    Butte Lake
We only fished Butte Lake for a couple of hours on one day. The fishing was slow. Between three fly fishers we landed only two fish. Both fish where nice 18-20” long, nice and healthy. These fish are wild fish with the only fly picking up fish was a JFair’s Peacock Black Wiggle Tail in size 10.
All in all it was a great time. We have three campouts on the schedule – including this one next year. Enjoy the pictures!
