    Default Destin, Florida advice

    Hi all,

I am heading to Destin, Florida the last week of May this year for a wedding and was planning on getting a line wet. I will not be hiring a guide but plan on renting a kayak for a couple days on the Choctawhatchee Bay in Destin. I am going to be bringing my 7wt single hand with my Behemoth reel.

Has anyone on here fished in this area? I have never fished salt and want to try my luck on some Bull Reds, speckled trout or anything else that likes to tug. I would love some tips on flies, if my 7 wt is enough and general advice. Thanks so much and tight lines!!

    -Mike

Lee's recommendation is a good one.......

I bought Captain John Kumiski's book on fly fishing Florida's Redfish.

    John has several good books.....

Marilyn and I went out once with him for Redfish in Mosquito Lagoon.

He is very knowledgeable about fly fishing Florida's inshore salt water.

John could give you some good advice on tackle and flies.

Destin is in the beautiful Panhandle of Florida.

Most use #2 to #6 light Clouser style streamers.

AM and PM in low light with low wind might be nice for some small light colored poppers.

Google tackle shops near Destin, Florida.....

Email or call these shops. Some will have fly fishing tackle and flies.

    May should be nice......

Here is a reply from Marc Bale @ Sage:

    Hi Bill

Old Florida Outfitters is the best option there, outside of a Bass Pro Shop that’s actually pretty good.

Old Florida isn’t right in Destin, but it’s close by and should be able to help you out.
