Usually we get some at the mouth of the American River and the mouth of the Feather River in April from boats?

Should we have Shad in the American by mid-April?

Don't forget the spring Stripers in the Lower American River......

Plus spring run adults steelhead and spring run Half-pounders.......

I'd be interested to hear if that happens again this year. Please let me (us) know.

The earliest I've personally seen a shad caught was by Aron on 4/19/13 down in the lower river on the American. Bill Kiene told me that he has heard of them caught as early as the first week in April.

I was playing golf at Campus Commons a little over a week after I got married (3/26/8 and saw a guy pick up a couple, always stuck with me as a start date, although tax day is probably more realistic (and I'm sure wading at Verona is out this year).

With the lost steelhead season, shad fever will hit earlier and harder this year...

    Alosa,

Perhaps I should have said " the 3 rd weekend in April in a typical year"

It always used to be when the cottonwood started to bloom.

My dad and I would always start at Verona, but the American was a lot closer to home. There used to be a little island below the old Fair Oaks bridge that was a favorite spot too. That's when I started tying shad flies, age 10.

Frank Alessio liked that island too. One day he stopped by my house after fishing there driving his grandpa's old old Dodge PU. He had a bed load of shad and was taking them home to can or smoke. He used to like the roe fried as well.

Never too many, and nothing went to waste in those days. Tony

I met Frank through Aron. I knew that Sunrise used to be a popular shad spot when you could drive out on the gravel bar. I'm going to ask Frank about the truck bed full of shad the next time I see him.
