Agree 100% with Mike, Bill. If your really going for the long bomb, couple loops off the tongue before the fingers works well too! But then again , that's where the long lines come into play!

seen some comments from others that camera is too close but I disagree though a couple of wider shots to better show anchor placement might be good. But casting is all about muscle memory and this video really lets you focus on what Mike's hands and arms are doing. You miss a lot when looking at wider views as you tend to focus on the rod and that will not help you near as much

Mike McCune, Scott O'Donnell and Ed Ward have fished and guided together as a group for decades in Alaska, WA and OR.

These guys have worked on one of the best methods to help people learn how to Spey cast and fish for Steelhead.

They realized that the big long Spey rods (14' 9wt) that originally came over from Europe were not really needed or fun for some of the smaller SH rivers so they helped Sage, G.Loomis and other rod companies develop smaller two handed fly rods.

They also worked with the line companies to develop smaller, shorter fly lines for these small rods.

They developed the Rio Short Skagit heads and also the Rio MOW tips (McCune-O'Donnell-Ward).

If you go on one of their guide trips you will be taught their high developed system of Spey casting that is extremely effective, especially for beginners.

These guys are life long, full time guides, tackle developers and instructor working for Sage and Rio.

If you get a chance to go with them it will change your experience with Spey and Steelhead.

Fall (Oct/Nov) they are usually doing trips on the Grande Ronde River.

In the Winter and Spring they are usually on the WA and OR coastal rivers chasing big wild Steelhead.

*Some years ago I started using the word "Commando" to describe Craig Ziegler and Mike McCune to try to get meaning to the fanatical year round lifestyle in fly fishing.

Their life is fly fishing......full time, year round.
