    Default Eureka Fly Shop

Just called the Eureka Fly Shop and the number does not work. Did they close? or is there a new number? Great shop.

Mad River tackle in arcata has a limited fly fishing inventory but they do have quality flies (aqua flies) if you are in the area and need to stock up.

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Bought my first Fly rod there a looooong time ago. Did anything spring up in its place?

All of my Home town fly shops are now gone ;-(

    RIP Central Coast Fly Fishing
    RIP Western Sport Shop
    RIP Eureka Fly shop

Thanks to all those people who would sit and put up with me in those stores. All your time and information was so greatly appreciated and lives on with me on the river. I use too drive 3 hours to western sport shop and hang for hours and talk flies cast rods in the parking lot. Bought my first 30ft shooting head and running line it change my life.

I have never fished the eel and was planning a trip now through march. I will be swinging. I was hoping to talk and get some general info on the main stem and south fork. Mainly water flows to look for and fly selection. Not asking for spots.

Like many of us, Mike Kuczynski, owner of the Eureka Fly Shop, got old too and decided to close it up.

He is doing well guiding some of his old customers and having a good time.

You will probably run into him out on the lower Klamath River in the Fall.

Best option left in the Eel area is Grundmans in Rio Del.

Agree with Terry on Grundman's. We always try to make a small purchase after picking
his brain for ideas and tips. For area reports, check Kenny Priest's "Fishing the North Coast"
    in Eureka's Times-Standard paper on-line.
    Best to all,

For the main Eel, look for flows on the Scotia gauge around 3,000cfs. That is optimal, imho. But usually, the river is clear enough to fish with flows up to 6,000cfs. Above that, it's usually muddy.

SF Eel, look for flows at the Miranda gauge around 1,500cfs or around 500cfs on the Leggett gauge. That will most likely ensure a nice green colored river.

Flies? Black and blue/purple streamers, orange comets, popsicles, and other marabou streamers. Most guides on the SF Eel fish egg patterns. The SF fish are not as grabby as on the main Eel for some reason. Get a Streamtime map for sure. And float it if you can.
