I used to work there several years ago and actually started the fly department. Bob Bouke (the owner) has been trying to sell that place for years but wants three times what it is really worth. He offered it to me eight or ten years ago but I said "no thanks".

People wisely plan on how to OPEN a business. Figure the cost of goods, the profit margins, the general expenses, insurances, utilities, payroll, etc., etc. But, what most failing business owners don't plan for,,,,, is how to get OUT when you want to quit.

Sometimes death or illness leaves a family the hardship of trying to get rid of old inventory for pennys on the dollar that nobody wants. Then what? Yard sale?,,,, donations,?

Good luck trying to sell a white elephant.

It is so hard to make it with a small independent business today, especially in California.

Many small businesses do make it for several reasons:

    1) They have a good location with reasonable rent.

    2) They also have it all paid for with no debt. That is called having 'old money'.

    3) The owners, Mom & Pop, both work there.

    4) They have years of experience in their business.

    5) They have many good friends who send people there.

6)They have a good population around them.

I think having a good inventory of goods on hand is important. Doesn't look good to walk past empty bins, hooks with nothing on them except a label of what is supposed to be hanging there.
Another thing I feel is important (in any business) is a smile or greeting from the guy(s) or girl(s) behind the counter, maybe show just a little bit of interest in what you're up to, offer a bit of advice or information. Not even lifting your head up from what you're reading or working on when a customer comes in is a turn-off for me.

    Default Johnson's....

I've been in that store many times over the years. I found it to be cluttered giving it a feeling of being smaller than it looked like from outside. There was so much non-fly fishing inventory that it often took some time to find what you might want. When Tony ran the fly department, it was organized and easily accessed.

That said, it seems to me that it's the only game in town and should be a good store with some organization and more attentive help. The competition is Walmart/Big 5 Sporting Goods type stores.
