    Default Writers on the Fly

Last night a buddy and I attended a little shindig they call "Writers on the Fly". It is sort of a spin off of the Fly Fishing Film Tour except in this event authors read a couple of their short, flyfishing related works. The guy who runs Fly Fishing Journal organizes it (I think that's correct but could be wrong). He always tries to include a non-profit organization in the event, providing them an opportunity to publicize their work and do a little fund raising. At this event he invited Fly Fishing Collaboration. Really interesting work - they identify some of the most needy villages and towns world-wide and work with them to install a completely self-sustaining tilapia fish farm. The waste from the farm goes into soil amendments which are 10 times more effective than commercial fertilizers. The village gets the fish and better farm crops. The ultimate objective is to prevent those villages from falling prey to human traffickers who convince them to let the traffickers take their children off to "school and development". Pretty cool stuff.

Anyway, we listened to 4 or 5 authors read a couple pieces each. They had some local artist displaying their work for sale, had some books for sale (and if the author was there they would sign them), oh and there was beer. They had a small raffle. The event was free with whatever you wanted to donate for the beer (donated by Cascade Lakes Brewery) and the raffle ticket proceeds went to FF Collaborative.

It might be a Pacific Northwest centric event for now but if you get the chance go. They don't publicize it very widely. Here's a link:
