Maui Bonefish

Just got back from Maui and had a opportunity to fish with Jon Jon Tabon of 'Local Fishing Knowledge'. He has many packages available most are fishing from a Hobie Kayak. On our outing we fished from a Hobie 17' ProAngler. I stood in the front and casted with his direction and he maneuvered the kayak to keep me on the fish. This was a fly fishing trip. He supplied all gear and was a wonderful guide full of excitement. I would recommend him. Book early. We had success with bonefish blue fin Trevally and a lady fish. We were on the water and fishing in 10 minuets.

Tabon just had a nice write-up in the Feb./March issue of Hana Hou ! , the Hawaiian Airlines magazine. He talks about what to wear like pale blue shirts and beige shorts or pants so as to not scare the fish when wading or getting close.

Tim, you look like you had a pretty good day. How was standing in a kayak?

Standing in the Kayak was not to bad. It took a little getting used to. Behind me in the picture you can see that there was a bar that I leaned against. Also I should say that Jon Jon adjusted the day that we went out so that we would have better water. for the most part it was pretty calm. Also he was very animate about wearing the right clothing. Camouflage is very important. We fished out of a Hobie 17' pro angler a 2 man fishing kayak.
I also have to say how helpful and patient he was.

What weight of rod did you use?

Brought my own gear but ended fishing with Jon Jons gear it was a 8 at Hardy rod and reel. Was pretty easy to cast eaten with the 14' leader. He had 250 yards of backing on the reel and I was getting nervous on the two big runs the first bone fish made.
