Default Rod weight and line for jumbo pole dancers

Been throwing the medium pole dancer with a 9wt xi3 with the outbound short 9wt with good success but wanted to get an outfit to throw the jumbo.

I like my method 8wt a lot for sinking line but was thinking maybe the 9wt method would be good for the jumbo with maybe a 10 or 11 wt outbound short.

What are you guys using to throw the jumbos successfully? thanks!

I cannot see using anything bigger than an 8 wt. for Delta stripers. I use a fiberglass 7 wt for them, and it will handle 10 lbs. maybe better.

If I was throwing that big Pole Dancer for tropical salt water fishing I would use a powerful light weight 10 weight rod with an 11 weight Rio OBS Tropical floater.

For the Delta maybe try a 9 weight with a 10 weight OBS floater?

*PS: I have fished 100% barbless since 1975.......for everything.

** Rio Outbound Short lines are already 2 sizes over.

Thanks. I don't think a 7wt would be able to toss the jumbo pole dancer at least for my stroke. The medium one is a decent workout after more than 2 hours of fishing. I think I'll keep an eye out for a new method 9 wt and try over lining it with the OBS one or two up.

I haven't tried it yet with my xi3 so maybe I'll give that a shot first to see if I can make it fly!

I have used a #9 and over lined it , but a #10 over lined works even better. A good friend of mine uses a 500 grain skagit head attached to a shooting line. He loves to throw the big Pole Dancer.

+1 to that- buddy does same with a #10 NRX and it gets it out there well.

I've tried with a #9 BVK and #9 OBS and its a workout... He got me on the same track with the skagit head.

A 10 is much friendlier, as is the Pike/Musky line, more adept for the grande PD.

9/10 Beulah Opal. You'll thank me later. Pic below I tossed a Clouser but the giant PD is a perfect fit as well.

So good Gregg......you are killing us.

*Captain Kevin Doran does not like big stuff for top water Stripers because it is just too hard for his guide clients to throw very far.

He also does not make a big bunch of commotion, more of a constant smooth swimming thing.

Fished this morning on the AR but didn't throw the Jumbo PD. Next time... I did throw the medium PD for a couple decent fish which is just so exciting to see them come up and crush the fly especially with the clear water.

nice picture Gregg! Looks like a good time!
