Default How many rivers have you caught a Shad on?

I started fishing American Shad on the Sacramento River in south Sacramento below the Zoo down at the "Minnow Hole" when I was a teenager. We road our bikes down there with spinning rods. It use to be the outflow for the old sewage plant.

    Lower American River - CA

    Lower Feather River - CA

    Lower Sacramento River - CA

    Lower Yuba River - CA

    Saint John's River - FL

I did my PhD on east coast shad from 33 rivers along the east coast (St. Lawrence River in Quebec to St. John's in Florida) and personally caught them from many Canadian rivers, Then I moved to the west coast to study shad along the Pacific.

Here's a link with research papers on shad for anyone who may be interested:

    Very cool!
I grew up where shad are native- 2 species, Hickory and American. Also a bunch of other herrings. Chesapeake Bay. Ever make it down our way? When I was a kid stocks were really diminished. My most memorable shad was still my biggest one, trapped it with our skim boards at low tide on a small trib to Ches. I have never caught one out West. To keep with the thread theme, Patapsco River tribs, Suzy-Q Tribs, Patuxent Tribs, and if memory serves Rappohannock. Funny tidbit, similar story to yours Bill: I lived on a tobacco farm on the Patuxent. The property bordering the farm I lived on was a sewage treatment plant for the rapidly encroaching suburbia. Anyway, the shad and herring (and stripers and yellow perch for that matter) would stack up in the treated effluent stream. I think it was more oxygenated and probably cleaner. It was a great little run to swing flies though!

Now I get the Alosa.. never registered before

Yeah...that's why I'm 'Alosa'. Yes, I got shad from various Chesapeake Bay river (Nanticoke, Susquehanna, Patuxent, Potomac, Rappahannock, James and York). Actually I got shad from 21 US rivers and 12 Canadian rivers. Fun times.

I know Alosa has pretty much all of us beat! He knows shad.

Put me down for the Umpqua, Feather and Sac. Seems like California shad run larger than Oregon shad to me, but I'm kind of a shad hack.

Bill sorry for the quick thread hijack, but since Alosa and Salmonid are both fish biologists (I think), I gotta digress. I got a BS in Fisheries Management at University of Maryland (the Fighting Terrapins). Didn't take it past that. Maryland is very much a shad and striper school, but somehow I wrote my senior thesis on...Lahontan cutthroat trout of Independence Lake. In a weird turn of events 20 year later, I work for the non-profit that manages the boats, trails, and recreation on Independence Lake Preserve. I'd love to find that paper and laugh like crazy at it!

Anyway, back to the shad rivers!!!
