    Default Rancho Seco 12-30-15 Brrrrrr

12-28 With a break in the weather i decided to give Rancho Seco a try for some trout, and winter bass fishing with a indicator and my balance fly. After stopping at my favorite taco wagon to pick up some snacks i got to the lake about 10 am, didn't see any action going on so i fished the northeast end coves for trout, and the deeper water for bass.
I didn't get any grabs or see any trout actively on the surface in the back cove's, so i moved out to the deeper water to fish for bass with a indicator, after sitting there for a couple of hours with the indicator doing nothing, i got cold and called it a day......a fish locator would be helpful.
12-30 Some members from the GBF club decided to go fish Rancho Seco even after my no fish report, so with nothing better to do i decided to take my pram and my fish locator to see if i could see where those bass were suspended at, so after a quick stop at the taco wagon i went to the south boat ramp to launch my pram, i motored around looking for suspended bass, all the fish that showed up were on the bottom in 20-30 ft of water, i did try to fish for them but after a couple of hours and no grabs i headed back to the boat ramp, and while i was motoring along the dam a hatchery truck drove by with a string of cars chasing it to the boat ramp. There were 30 people standing on the dock fishing, and i could see trout swimming around the little cove, so i drop my anchor and started hooking trout after trout, after about a hour the action slowed down and the dock open up for me to take my boat out safely ...... WOW
So if you have nothing better to do you might want to grab a taco and head to Rancho Seco for a tug.

Thanks for the report Gene. I knew someone had to be fishing.

Rancho Seco is actually a nice place to fish.

Usually the water is very clear.

Planted Rainbow trout in the winter and bass & panfish in the summer.

Gene your the first person I've heard of use the Indicator setup since my write-up! Sorry to hear it didn't work out though lol. It can be tough for largemouth. I've tried it out at the Afterbay for largemouth and usually have a hard time. Don't know what it is, Largemouth must really hunker down deep in structure in the winter. Good thing you still got into some trout action though!

If you can make the trip out here to Oroville this winter, we can get on the Lake and I'll show you what I know. Very cool to see someone testing it!

I would like very much to learn more about this indicator fishing for bass in the winter Ryan.....but i'm Ret. and being on a fix fishing budget that's getting smaller every year, hiring a guide + a tip would wipe my fishing budget for a couple of years.....LOL Thank you for sharing your info with me and other's
I shared your web page on our fly club (GBF) fly fishing forum, and some of the other members are excited about this indicator bass fishing......Are you doing any fly clubs talks about indicator bass fishing ?????

Sorry Gene, I should have clarified I wouldn't charge you. First person to try it out deserves a 100% free trip in my mind. No tip or nothing needed. Wouldn't be an official guide trip because I'll fish too!

Thanks for spreading the info around! I haven't spoken at any fly clubs yet, but I plan on doing so in the future for sure. Good to hear some club members are interested in this!

Thanks Ryan ...... PM sent.....if you can afford it, hiring a guide is a short cut in the learning curve in catching a very big spotted bass at Bullard Bar Reservoir or any of our foothill lakes that has some spotted or smallmouth bass in it this winter.
