    Default October Caddis

Here's my take on an October Caddis for Steelhead

    Hook: U503 size 8
    Weight: Wraps/underbody of lead/nonlead wire
    Thread: Black Uni 6/0
    Tag: Gold Mylar Tinsel
    Tail: Brown Hackle Fibers
    Body: Some random orange dubbing
Rib: Gold/silver Mylar Tinsel (depends on my mood which side I use)
    Collar: Natural Partrige

Not sure if it'll work on our local river but I'm going to give it a shot anyway. Are there even any October Caddis' in the AR? Maybe I'll take a few of these with me up to the Trinity and see if they'll produce up there.

Just realized I put this in the wrong section. Mods please move to Fly Tying section.

You are fine...it could be put in 3 categories:

    Steelhead/Salmon

    Fly Tying

    Entomology & Flies

I love that fly.....it's really nice.......would sell in any Nor Cal fly shop.

*Our own Noe Fierros ties something like that for his favorite fall Klamath River pattern after fishing the river for over 30 years.

**Top Steelhead Spey guide Jason Hartwick also has an October Caddis Steelhead pattern for fall fishing.

Thanks Bill! I haven't seen Noe's or Jason's patterns. Would love to see a pic if you've got a couple.

Great looking fly, I tie up a lot of very similar variations and have done quite well at times with them. One variant that I like a lot is to add two small strips of Lady Amherst tied in as "horns". Maybe 2-3 fibers for each. I've had some nice rainbows and browns hammer it on the swing during the fall, and have hooked some nice steelhead on it as well. You should fish that with confidence, lots of good stuff going on there to catch someone's eye.

Looks like it would work anywhere there is an October caddis hatch. Good luck.

    Beautiful Fly!
Question about soft hackles in general for the group:
I like to tie them for trout and steelies with tails. I think they look nicer. Caddis don't have tails. Does the group think the fish care to that level of detail?

Thanks for all the comments everyone! JasonB, I like your idea and I'd love to give that a shot but I don't have any Amherst... Can't bring myself to spend that kind of money for one feather although it's probably worth it. @JohnSv, I have often had the same thoughts whenever I tie my "caddis" Patterns. I usually find myself tying everything with at least some sort of "tail" and depending on my mood when I'm fishing, I chose to either leave it on or clip it off and see if that small variation makes a difference. IMHO, I don't think the fish really care if there's a tail or not as long as the rest of the fly looks buggy.

@NjBeast, Thanks! The recipe is nothing special but is as follows:
    Hook: U503 size 8
    Weight: Wraps/underbody of lead/nonlead wire
    Thread: Black Uni 6/0
    Tag: Gold Mylar Tinsel
    Tail: Brown Hackle Fibers
    Body: Some random orange dubbing
Rib: Gold/silver Mylar Tinsel (depends on my mood which side I use)
    Collar: Natural Partrige

The fun thing about Steelhead flies is that you can each one a little different.

I have an old favorite fall Steelhead fly that I got from the late Chuck Vongelden who was a fisheries biologist and a world class fly fisher.

It is a classic winged style fly with Golden Pheasant tippet tail, gold tag, Peacock body with reverse wire wrap for strength, brown bear hair wing and brown hackle. I think Chuck used a Turkey quill wing on his? This was a fly he used on the Trinity River back in the day.

**That brown Partridge mixed in would be a nice addition.
