    Default Lake Davis .....Sept 9-13

WOW.....Davis Lake never seems to amaze me, a week or so ago i was catching fish every day, but this trip i didn't land a fish the first 3 days. I found lots of fish on the surface in the morning and evening from Eagle Point to Freeman Bay....but....they didn't like any of my small buggies stuff, there was a lot of hatches coming off, some very big blood midges, black caddis, incredible midge hatch, and a huge callibaetis hatch coming off at 10 am to 2 pm, needless to say that there is a lot of food in Lake Davis for the trout to EAT, and the trout can be very selected.
After eating my lunch on Sat. i decided to jump out of the box, i gave up on matching the hatch and decided to do some ripping with my big 3 inch streamer in Freeman bay during the huge callibaetis hatch coming off. In one hour i landed 3 very large trout fishing a floating line, 15 ft. leader, and the big streamer......WOW....that evening i went down to Eagle Point to fish, and using a floating line, and my big streamer i caught 2 more very big trout.
On Sunday morning i went into Catfish cove to see if i could find a toad, i didn't see any trout on the surface or get any grabs....but i did find a big school of bait fish 3-5 inches feed on the midge hatch coming off. I think those big trout have been feeding on the bait fish after the weed beds die off for the winter, this could be why they would grab my streamer during the bug hatch.
So when thing get tough, try jumping outside the box.

Scott V. heading out into Freeman during the huge Callibaetis hatch.

It was nice to see some snail shells and even some live one's floating around.

My camera died so i don't have any big fish pictures, just some camera shy trout one's

Steveg.......the Grasshopper, and Lighting Tree campgrounds are on Lake Davis and are still open, i heard the Sierra Pine motel is a good place to stay in Portola, and i'm sure there are some B an B's in Portola. When you go try to pick a weather window, because this time of the year you could have any kind of weather at Lake Davis. You won't catch big numbers of trout but you could catch a toad that would put a big smile on your face.....Hiring a guide at the start of your trip would give you enough info to fish on your own for the rest of your trip......good luck

    Gene + stillwater + marabou = fish
You can substitute your name for his, but that's all.
Yes, this will be on the test.

I have found that using AirFlo clear floating line is a big help at Davis too.

Should you ever be able to do one of his fish outs at Davis you MUST go. The little things he mentions that are to him, so simple and obvious, were to me little nuggets of gold. Looking forward to a few days at Davis at the beginning of October.
