    Default Pyramid Trip Last Weekend

    Hi All,
Just wanted to post a trip report from last weekend. Drove up to Pyramid Thursday night and met my friends Jim (who came over from Roseville) and Doug (who flew in from Denver.) We stayed at the Grand Sierra Resort and fished with Rob Anderson for three days (Fri-Sun.)

Friday was partly cloudy and the temp got up to about 50 degrees. We got there about 7:30 and joined the line up on ladders.

This was Doug's first time at Pyramid and within 15 minutes he had hooked up.

A 12 pounder on your first few casts is going to make you spoiled real quick.

I was able to get in on the fun as well.

We did pretty well for numbers and size for the day, and after about 8 hours of fishing we called it a day and headed back to the casino for dinner and drinks.

Saturday saw a big change in weather with much colder temps, snow, and wind. It was a slow drive out to the lake due to the snow, but we made and joined the other hearty souls who were already out on the lake.

Again the big fish showed up early, this time with Jim landing this brute before Doug and I had gotten our waders on.

The weather was cold, with snow stinging our faces and the wind making it so we had to take breaks warming up in our cars. Despite, or maybe because of, the weather, the fishing was steady.

We even were treated to a vivid double rainbow in the afternoon.

The virtues of Rob's cooking have been extolled here before, but I'll say that homemade chicken soup, grilled ham and cheese, and hot coffee from a thermos were perfect for a cold, blustery day.

Sunday was a completely different situation weather wise. Blue bird skies and light winds made for pretty views, but the fishing slowed down considerably.

We didn't catch a fish all morning until Doug tagged this big boy right before lunch. It weighed out right at 15lbs and was an omen for what was to follow.

Doug's fish and cheeseburgers off the grill buoyed our spirits and gave us hope for the afternoon.

Immediately after lunch, fishing still was very slow. We only had 3-4 take downs (and all missed on the hook set) until around 3PM when the wind shifted and all hell broke loose.

Default Pyramid Trip Last Weekend Part IV

In the next 2 hours we had an amazing run. Twice we had all three of us fighting fish at the same time and amongst the three of us we landed 21 fish.

The highlight of the trip was Jim catching two 15lb fish within an hour of each other

All in all it was an amazing three days of fishing and camaraderie. It was great to fish with old friends again and share a hobby we all love. Rob, as usual, was an excellent guide. Not only did he get us into fish and keep our bellies full, but he taught us a ton and shared his knowledge of the fishery. I've fished with him three times before and can't recommend him enough. Add in the amazing beauty of the lake and it was a pretty perfect fishing trip. We're already planning our trip for next year.

    Hey Carl,

Great post! That was a really fun weekend for sure. It was nice meeting Doug Nelson. Can't wait to do it again next year.

This trip really lays out an important part of my guide service at the lake. We got rained on, snowed on and even some sleet. There was driving winds and some flat out bad weather. This is the type of weather that brings in the fish and leaves a trail of big fish pictures like the ones above.

I include hot food and coffee in my trips to not only show that I am going the extra mile but to also provide comfort to my clients. Keeping warm, hydrated and energized out at the lake puts you in a much better position to be ready when the fish are in close. I pour out a half of thermos of coffee at the end of the day in my sink quite often but on days like those it does not make it back home at the end of the day. I keep homemade soup in my freezer and bring it to the lake on cold days like we had.

Guiding Pyramid Lake for 13 years has taught me a lot about fishing in bad weather and how to keep people in the game when conditions are tough. 1/2 days on the Truckee river in the summer are a cake walk compared to the preparation I go through at Pyramid in the winter. You guys are troopers and really stayed in the game all weekend and it paid off. Congratulations to you Jim and Doug on one of the best few days I have ever seen at the lake. I already have guys trying to steal your weekend for next year LOL...
