Going to be there mid-October, and although I usually camp I might have company that would prefer lodging more substantial. I've driven into Portola once but wasn't paying attention.
Advice?
Recommendations?
Thanks in advance!

I usually stay here. Nothing fancy. Just a good value motel. One step up from camping.

Try the Pullman House in Portola on Commercial Street - you have to go across the bridge into old town. Breakfast included, about $60 per nite for a single.
The owner is Jan - she is a peach!!

"Bill I would recommend the Sierra Motel. There are also some cabins behind the Grizzly Store that are nice. There is also the Chalet Motel down the road towards Graegle about 5 miles that is really nice with restaurant on premises.
On a side note, fishing was very good today with fish taking callibaetis nymphs, some drys, and blood midges all morning. Large strong fish up to 22 inches this morning.
THE FALL BITE IS ON!"

When I fish Davis in the Fall, I usually stay at Sleepy Pines. I've also stayed at Sierra Motel. In my experience they're both OK for a basic, economical motel.
I also stayed at the Chalet View Lodge this summer for a family vacation. The room cost twice as much, and it was a lot nicer than those motels. If price isn't an issue then I'd recommend this place.
