    Default Eagle Lake in October

Several of us would like to make the trip, and not one of us has ever fished it for some reason. We feel that a guide would be helpful for the first trip, and would like your recommendations for any you have used, along with accommodations. Thanks so much.

Eagle Lake in CA is fly fished mostly in Oct, Nov and Dec.

November is the most popular month.

Some years people fly fish it the first week it is open in the spring.

At Kiene's Fly Shop, Terry Thomas is our most knowledgeable staff member.

He goes every year for a week with a group.

A guide is a great way to shorten the learning curve, Jon or Terry would be a good choice.
Here is a good web. site for Eagle Lake accommodation and info.

We use to have Jay Fair teach a group from our shop how to fly fish Eagle Lake every fall.

Jay likes to ride around in a boat, park it and get out and wade.

I think he like the areas with lava rock bottoms that hold lots of fresh water shrimp/scuds.

He likes a 9' #6 line 2 piece Sage moderate priced fly rod.

He uses a WF6F line when it is calm.

He uses a WF6 Intermediate fly line (these lines sink very slow 1 ips and are not clear/not transpartent) when it is windy.

He likes a 12' 3x knotless tapered leaders.

You can buy his wiggle nymphs (small long tailed woolly buggers) He like just a small amount of fine lead wire in his.

He does not like sunny calm cloudless days (blue bird weather)

He like to go out very, very early.

His retrieve is almost stopped......ultra slow retrieve. Most people can't do it that slow.....

He like a little wind and clouds/overcast.

He likes November , but December is his favorite.

Default Jay Fair & Eagle Lake

Jay Fair is the acknowledged guru on Eagle Lake. Jon Biaocchi has been mentored by Jay for years. He is highly recommended if a group wants a thorough orientation to Eagle Lake. Ask around and I'll bet his name will be mentioned a lot.

    Thanks Frank,

I think Jon has probably taken Jay's place as the go to guide on Eagle Lake now.

I was mostly reminiscing about the good old days.....

I think Jay is probably well retired and I hope he is still alive?

I've been fortunate to have some great off line responses on this request, including from Jon, and it appears that we should wait a month for Eagle Lake.

We're now going to Davis. I don't know that well either, only fished it once. October should be good!

Still a little early for Davis as well. I will wait until at least September for Davis.

I think May/June and Oct are good months for Davis Lake in CA.
