Why do steelhead change color from chrome to green/red while in the freshwater?
Why do steelhead change color from chrome to green/red while in the freshwater?
Their body is changing phase, all of their energy is diverted to their spawning organs
I think there is also something to be said about blending into their surroundings. I believe the main reason though is like Tayler stated, think about most male species, a bunch of show offs when it comes down to reproduction.
I would say all of the above is correct but I think a large part of the beginning stage is the re-entry into fresh water and the loss of scales. Then the vicious cycle takes off from there, color change and then the nasty flesh eating white spots. Bet they can't wait to soak in that deep blue salty tub!
