    Default What the??....

I've been fishing this small stream up in the mountains for a while now, but this is the first time I've seen these bugs. Any idea what they are? There were thousands of them; on the trees, rocks, floating in the water, under the water. No idea if they came from the water or were falling in....

I was still able to catch a few fish on a parachute Adams though. I thought the trout would be gorging themselves on these.

Arb, what you have here is the larva of the Alder Leaf Beetle. They will totally denude the Alder trees. The plus sides are the trees will survive and you can tie up some beetle imitations in black with some green in them and cash in on the hatch. Ed
Elwood: It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

    Jake: Hit it.

Do these turn a metallic green? I saw them in swarms earlier this year.

Yup, that's the one. Ran into them on the Rubicon a few years back and sent pics to some friends who sent them on to other friends and after a rather lengthy chain a state biologist identified them. Hard to believe the numbers of beetles that pup up. Ed
