For similar reasons I've been looking to explore local options in delta and surf. Otherwise given sf location, work and new wife I only get out once a month at best.

So count me in for any local exploring.

    Cheers Steve

It's more important to spend time with your kids when they are little.

Get a tent trailer and take them with you.

When you are older you can fish your ass off.

Yup, life happens. I have a four year old and another little guy who will be one in two weeks. Before kids, I would fish weekly, sometimes mulitple outings in a week. Honestly now, I only get out once every month or two. I'm good with it, and once the boys get older I think I'll be able to get out a lot more. I like what Bill said.

P.S. I live in the foothills, with places to fish minutes from my home. Where does all of the time go!

I agree. And I remember taking my 3 year old "fishing." I put fishing in quotes, because I got two casts in when my son decided throwing rocks in the river and playing pirate was a lot more fun. We had a great day - so great that I remembering it 9 years later.

If you really need to fish, do what it takes to learn how to fish where you live. But don't sell the gear. You need it when you wife and child go to Grandma's house in Iowa for a week. Then you can fish your ass off.

I'm lucky to live here in redding. I have three kids. The youngest is 9 months old. There is so much to fishing so close to my house that I can fish after work for a couple hours or fish a half day on a weekend and still spend plenty of time with my kids. This allows me to get out at least once a week sometimes twice.

Even with kids, you will find windows of time. I have also found that " Where your treasure lies, there your heart will be also" (or sumpin like that) meaning, your interests and priorities are going to go all over the map when raising a family. There have been many times where I stepped back and realized "Wow! I havent been on the water in 9 months" and I was totally fine with it. Now that Im an empty nester (sniff sniff) I can start gravitating back to those priorities B.C.

I've been doing this. My wife thinks I'm having an affair.
"For years, every time he stopped at the house to collect his paper money, it was the same routine. The old man in the wheelchair would ask him how he'd like it if he took him fishing and showed him a few things. He always said he'd like that.
When the old man finally passed away, his wife gave the kid a box of flies. He has them today, tucked away in a closet, never to be fished."
